ONE WAY STREETS

ONE WAY

On the whole one way streets are mainly found around Town Centres.

This does not mean you won't find them in other places, but in Town Centres you tend to get a heavier flow of traffic and to help avoid traffic backing up by vehicles trying to emerge from junctions in both directions and causing hold ups, it makes sense that making the traffic flow in one direction would help ease any congestion.

The system tends to works very well but it does come with its dangers.

Do Pedestrians know its a One Way System?

This could lead to pedestrians who want to cross the road looking to their right and seeing no vehicles coming

(which is where the most danger would be in the case on a two way road) and start to walk straight out into the road.

Therefore, when driving in One Way Systems always be extra cautious around pedestrians.

Vehicles can legally park on either side of the road (unless parking restrictions are in place)
Vehicles can also legally overtake in either lanes so be extremely cautious to check your mirrors and blind spots before merging lanes.

Another reason for making sure that you know your traffic signs.
Signs like the ones below will be seen much more around Town Centres and One Way Systems.

Things that can be done on One Way Streets that may not be able to be done on other streets.

You can overtake in either lane.

Be very aware of your surrounding when doing this, and be sure that vehicles in the lane next to you know you are passing them.

You can park on either sides of the road (assuming no restrictions) facing the same direction.

Where two opposing traffic lanes meet, merging into a One Way System there is normally no need to stop (unless Give Way Signs are present) So stay in the lane you are in and merge into the other lane further along the road, this will allow traffic to keep flowing.

Expect to see these types of signs around
One Way Streets.
